The rescue dog who wrote a book

The rescue dog who wrote a book

Ouzo was rescued as a young puppy in Karditsa, Greece. He had been badly injured, and was in terrible pain for days, until the rescuers got to him. His leg had to be amputated, and after his recovery, Ouzo (then named Christiano) spent about two years in the dog shelter, until his adoption.
Every dog story begins with a home, and this is what’s amazing about this book, the fact that it doesn’t focus on the rescue and Ouzo’s past. Adoption is like a rebirth in a way. Dogs literally start over when they are rehomed, and as they tend to live the present rather than the past, new beginnings mean much more to them than they mean to us.
When telling rescue dog stories, we tend to focus on the “opening credits” rather than the story itself. For us as viewers, it’s all about the rescue itself, and after the dog recovers, it’s not that important anymore. But for the dogs, it’s all about the life they live, about every moment, every new thing, every new smell, about the present. Adoption is a magical thing, and at the same time it can be very overwhelming. For the first months, there is a lesson to be learned every single day, both by the new dog, and the humans, and Ouzo’s book focuses on those first lessons, as he reinvents himself as a beloved pet dog. It’s written in the first person, with humor, wit, and honesty, and it will make you realize how important those first months are for a newly adopted dog.
